Complementary therapies are gradually becoming accepted as very useful additions to traditional medical care.

Reflexology is a popular pressure therapy using the feet to balance the whole body, an ancient form of which is said to have been used by the Chinese more than 5000 years ago. It is based on the principle that reflex points on the feet are linked to corresponding areas within the body. In working specific reflexes, a variety of minor ailments can be helped, for example headaches, backache, pelvic pain, heart burn and general lethargy, leaving you with a feeling of intense relaxation. The use of reflexology in labour has been clinically shown to be helpful for many women.

If you prefer a more “hands on” approach, body massage with or without essential oils can be both soothing and calming, helping to relax and loosen tense muscles, easing aches and pains. It can help trigger the body’s natural painkillers, giving a general sense of contentment and wellbeing. Most massage techniques can be modified and adapted to use a seated position whilst you are pregnant in particular Indian head massage.

Moving on from pregnancy, complementary therapies can be especially useful in the post natal period, enabling you to recharge your batteries and enjoy a well earned and welcome treat!

Baby massage is suitable for babies from six weeks until five years of age and is incredibly rewarding and really good fun for parents as well as babies. It helps with wind, joint flexibility and development and of course bonding. Baby Massage can begin whenever you feel your baby will be most responsive but is best introduced before your baby is ‘on the move’.
